Women’s Soccer Drops BIG EAST Opener at Connecticut, 2-0

STORRS, Conn. -- The Creighton women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-0 decision in the BIG EAST opener at Connecticut on Thursday, Sept. 21 at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.
The Bluejays played without the reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, Keelan Terrell, and dropped their record to 2-3-4 on the year and to 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play with the loss, while the Huskies improved to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in league play with the victory.
Connecticut controlled possession throughout much of the match, outshooting the Bluejays, 17-11. The Huskies also held an 8-4 edge in shots on goal while freshman goalkeeper Maddie Merrick collected six saves in her first collegiate start.
The Huskies opened the scoring during the 38th minute of play. Joyce Ryder found some open space in the midfield, sending a lofted shot into the back of the net from roughly 35-yard out past the leaping effort of Merrick for the first goal of the game. Laci Lewis was credited with an assist on the play as she found Ryder in the midfield.
Connecticut added to its lead in the early moments of the second half as Cara Jordan tapped in her second goal of the season to give UConn a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute. Chioma Okafor set the play into motion delivering a cross to the far post where Jordan one touched a shot into the back of the net.
Down 2-0 the Bluejays turned up the offensive pressure down the stretch. Senior Lara Kazandjian and junior Azumi Manriki had the best scoring opportunities for the Bluejays, firing a pair of shots on goal. Connecticut goalkeeper, Kaitlyn Mahoney, however smothered both attempts and recorded her fifth shutout of the season.
The Bluejays return to Morrison Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 24 as Creighton plays host to #17 Georgetown at 1 p.m.
