Bluejay Men's Soccer Faces DePaul in BIG EAST Road Opener on Saturday

Omaha, Neb. -- The BIG EAST road schedule begins at DePaul as the Bluejays start the path to defending their BIG EAST Tournament Championship on Saturday afternoon in Chicago at 1:00 p.m.

Scouting DePaul (1-4-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST)
After opening the 2023 season with a victory over Lindwood, DePaul is winless over the last six contests. In the last two matches the Blue Demons fell at Xavier in the BIG EAST opener 4-1 on September 15 and 4-2 to Loyola Chicago at home on Tuesday.
Five different DePaul players have scored one goal this season. Christian Baumgartner leads the squad with three points, adding an assist.
Goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz has logged every minute in the net this season, grabbing a BIG EAST best 41 saves in seven matches. Cruz has surrendered 12 goals for a 1.71 GAA.
Scouting Creighton (2-3-2)
The Bluejays opened BIG EAST action with their best match of the season, delivering a 2-1 win over #13 Marquette last Friday. Over their last five contests Creighton is 2-1-2, with road draws at Denver and Tulsa, wins over Michigan as well as Marquette and a loss at Kansas City.
Alfie Pope has guided Creighton's offense this season with a team best four goals and eight points, however six unique players have at least one goal and two others have notched at least one assist.
Creighton made a change in goal against Marquette as sophomore transfer Blake Gillingham earned his first time as a Bluejay. Gillingham earned the victory, denying five shots in 90 minutes. In the match at Tulsa he posted his first clean sheet as a Bluejay.
Bluejays Feel at Home in Illinois
Not only does Creighton have a winning record at DePaul, 4-2-0, the Bluejays have a plethora of ties to the city. Three current Bluejays came to Omaha from Illinois. Nick Cenek is from Peoria, while Ali and Omar Ramadan hail from Algonquin, Illinois. Omar Ramadan spent his first three collegiate seasons at DePaul. Former Bluejay great Fabian Herbers plays for the Chicago Fire. Additionally Saturday's announcer, Peter Ferreri, is a Creighton alum.
Herbers To Be Inducted into Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame
Herbers was one of four announced on Thursday, September 21 as the 55th Hall of Fame class in school history. Joining Herbers will be Marissa (Janning) Murphy (WBB), Christina Lunceford (SB) and Dave Schrage (BSB). Â
Two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-American Fabian Herbers scored 28 goals and dished 29 assists while leading Creighton to the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014 and 2015. His third and final season saw Herbers lead the nation with 47 points and a school-record 17 assists while ranking second nationally with 15 goals as Creighton won its first 15 games en route to spending eight weeks ranked No. 1 nationally. Though he turned pro after his junior year, Herbers ranks sixth in CU career history in assists (29), ninth in points (85) and 12th in goals (28). The Business major won the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award and BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, in addition to being a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in the classroom. The Ahaus, Germany native was a runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy, given to the nation's best player. The sixth overall pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, Herbers owns 16 goals and 16 assists while playing eight seasons in MLS with the Philadelphia Union and Chicago Fire franchises.
The 2023 Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Friday, November 10th inside Steelhouse Omaha.
Yellow Fever
Creighton is experiencing a bit of Yellow Fever over the past two seasons. The Bluejays led the NCAA with 66 yellow cards last season and have already accumulated 29 in their first eight matches in 2023. The Bluejays' match against Marquette brought a total of 10 yellow cards for the two squads. Eight times since 2000 Creighton has finished the season with 26 or fewer yellow cards.
