Shaun Campbell earns top-10 finish
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Shaun Campbell tied for ninth place with an even-par 210 to lead the Creighton men's golf team to a sixth place finish at the season-opening Ram Masters Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. The Bluejay team score of 860 was its best 54-hole score in September in more than 20 years, and its fourth-best mark among all tournaments in that time.
Campbell opened his senior campaign with rounds of 74, 66 and 70 to earn his third career top-10 finish. The New Zealand native had 14 birdies during the week, including six in his second round on Wednesday. Campbell's 66 tied his best round as a Bluejay and is tied for the fourth-best score by any CU player in the past 20 years.
Charlie Zielinski followed up a strong summer with a 20th place showing. He shot an opening-round 67, then followed that up with loops of 73 and 74. The senior's 67 matched his best round as a collegian. He's now shot in the 60s or 70s in all 84 rounds of his career.
Sophomore Grant Feldman compiled loops of 75, 69 and 73 to tie for 29th place. The 69 eclipsed his best round from last year by two shots.
Tying for 39th place was junior Cole Davis after he put up scores of 73, 73 and 74. Rounding out the Bluejay lineup was senior Jackson Thompson, who tied for 53rd with circuits of 77, 72 and 75 for a 224 aggregate.
Playing as an individual and not factoring into CU's team score was freshman Owen Price. The Tacoma, Wash., native tied for 37th place after owning scores of 71, 76 and 72 in his debut.
Creighton's 860 score and sixth place showing were a drastic improvement over its previous appearances at the event in 2018 (17th, 901), 2021 (8th, 925) and 2022 (14th, 882).
Connor Jones from host school Colorado State tamed the Fort Collins Country Club course (7,218 yards, Par 70) with loops of 64, 65 and 68 for a 197 total, topping the 75-person field by nine shots. Long Beach State won 13-team tournament with a 15-under score of 825 (270-280-275), beating CSU by 11 shots (281-269-286). Among the teams that Creighton (289-280-291) defeated were BIG EAST rival Xavier (291-296-286=873), CU was just eight shots better than the Musketeers at the 2023 BIG EAST Championships in April.
The Bluejays return to the course on Sept. 17-18 at the Wildcat Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.
