Omaha, Neb. -- Playing in one of the final home games of their careers, captains Jackson Castro and Mark O'Neill stepped up on both ends as each delivered a goal and each denied a first half counter attack to help the Bluejays best Villanova, 3-1, on Saturday, October 19.
The win lifted Creighton to 7-4-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in BIG EAST action, while Villanova fell to 1-8-4 overall and 0-5-0 in conference play.
Castro got the Bluejays on the board initially in the 15th minute (14:05) by bending in a shot from the top left corner of the box. Freshman Aaron Deppe set the play in motion by hitting Castro in space, then the senior did the rest.
Creighton pushed its edge to 2-0 late in the first half, scoring on a corner in the 42nd minute (41:04). Castro sent the entry pass toward the net. Initially O'Neill missed the header, but the ball glanced off the should of senior Sean Green. Once the ball fell to the pitch, O'Neill struck from two feet for his second goal of the season.
Villanova returned to the pitch with renewed energy in the second half, pulling within a goal in the 55th minute as Jason Bourgey pushed in a goal from five yards away with Luke Haggerty picking up the assist.
The Bluejays put the match out of reach in the 78th minute (77:57) as senior Lucio Berron sent a pass to sophomore Miguel Arilla on the defensive half. The native Spaniard did the rest, beating five defenders as he raced at least 60 yards for his third goal of the season.
Creighton finished with a sizable shot edge of 17-8 and a slim advantage in corners, 8-7.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 23rd at Akron as the Bluejays face the Zips at 6:00 pm (CT).
