Scouting Creighton (6-4-3, 1-2-1 BIG EAST)
With a 3-1 win over Villanova the Bluejays are on a three-match win streak for the first time since the magical 2022 run in the postseason that took Creighton all the way to the College Cup.
Captains Mark O'Neill and Jackson Castro led Creighton on both ends in the win over the Wildcats. Castro scored the first goal, bending in a shot from just inside the box. Later in the half Castro sent in a corner that eventually found the foot of O'Neill for the second goal.
Between the posts is experienced senior Blake Gillingham. The Bluejay netminder has started all 14 contests, recording 1,260 minutes on the season. Gillingham has been busy in the net, snagging 34 saves this season to earn a .673 save percentage.
Scouting #24 Akron (8-3-3, 5-0-0 BIG EAST)
Undefeated through five matches, the Zips have the inside track to the number one seed. Akron already claimed a road win at Georgetown (1-0) on Sept. 28.
An offensive juggernaut Akron has 37 goals in 14 matches, led by 16 goals from Emil Jaaskelainen.
He also leads the team with seven assists and 39 overall points.
Jaaskelainen is far from the only offensive weapon for the Zips as three other Akron players have at least three goals, including four goals and six assists from Dyson Clapier.
Mitch Budler has played every minute in goal for Akron this season, allowing 16 goals and posting five shutouts.
Three-Match Win Streak Moves Bluejays Into Position
Riding a three-match win streak, including back-to-back wins in BIG EAST play has moved Creighton into better position to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. The top eight teams will reach the postseason, with the top four teams hosting an opening round contest. Following the match with Akron, Creighton finishes the season at home against Butler (Oct. 26) and at Marquette (Nov. 2).
Arilla Races to Third Goal
The third goal of the win over Villanova delivered the knockout goal for the Bluejays, but was special as Miguel Arilla took the ball from beyond midfield to beat five Wildcat defenders for his third goal of the season. Luccio Berron set the play in motion by finding Arilla in space, then the Spaniard did the rest, dodging defenders down the pitch.
Bluejays Have Been at Their Best on the Road
Creighton has played some of its best soccer this season on the road. The Bluejays are 3-0-1 in road matches, including Grand Canyon and Xavier. The draw came at Providence when the Friars were ranked.
