CINCINNATI, Ohio – Despite fifth-year senior Maddie Radke delivering an early second half goal, the Creighton women's Soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Xavier on Thursday, October 3rd at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 4-5-1 on the season and 1-3-0 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier moved into first place in the BIG EAST standings after improving to 10-1-2 overall and 3-0-1 in league action.
A physical defensive battle in the opening 45 minutes saw neither team push across a goal as the Bluejays held the BIG EAST's top offensive team to just one shot in the first half.
Locked into a scoreless battle early in the second frame, Creighton wasted little to no time taking a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute as Radke netted her first goal of the season. Drawing a foul in the Bluejays attacking third, redshirt freshman Reese Carpenter delivered a centered cross into the box, where Radke flicked a shot into the top left corner of the goal to give the Bluejays a 1-0 advantage.
Xavier drew even less than four minutes later after earning a penalty kick off a VAR overturned hand ball inside the box. Samantha Wiehe stepped to the dot and converted on her fifth PK attempt of the season to level the contest at 1-1 in the 52nd minute.
The match remained knotted at 1-1 into the latter half of the second half before Xavier's Emma Flick delivered the game-winner with her sixth goal of the season in the 71st minute to give the Musketeers a 2-1 lead.
After holding Xavier to just one shot in the first half, the Musketeers erupted for 13 shots in the second frame, outshooting the Bluejays 14-7 in the contest. Xavier also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks, while junior Alyssa Zalac collected three total saves.
Creighton returns to the friendly confines of Morrison Stadium on Sunday afternoon when the Bluejays open up a three-match homestand against UConn at 1 p.m. CT.
