MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Creighton Women's Soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to Marquette on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 4-5-3 on the year and 0-2-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Golden Eagles climbed to 5-1-6 overall and 1-0-2 in league action.
A back-and-forth battle early in the opening frame saw Marquette flip momentum in the 33rd minute (32:58) as they take a 1-0 lead after a handball in the box by the Bluejays led to a penalty kick opportunity. Marquette's Megan Murray stepped to the dot and buried her team-leading fourth goal of the season into the bottom right corner to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
The Bluejays responded quickly, delivering the equalizer in the 37th minute (36:43) when junior Macy Felton threaded a through ball to freshman Gabby Wagenfuhr on the left side of the 18-yard box. Making her run, Wagenfuhr gathered the pass and chipped a shot over the outstretched reach of the Marquette goalkeeper and into the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Creighton dominated statistically in the opening 45 minutes, owning an 8-5 edge in shots, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The match would remain tied until the 82nd minute (81:53) when Marquette's Kaylie Sheehan sent the game-winning goal into the back of the net off a slip pass from Emily Fix at the edge of the 6-yard box.
The Bluejays finished the contest with a 14-9 lead in shots, while Marquette owned a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks created.
After back-to-back matches on the road, Creighton returns home on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Butler.
