Both teams now 4-1 on the season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska won its second regular-season game at Creighton since 1996 with a 74-63 upset over No. 14 Creighton on Friday night before a sellout crowd of 18,475 at CHI Health Center Omaha.
Both teams are now 4-1.
Juwan Gary (16) and Brice Williams (16) combined for 32 points for Nebraska, helping to offset a season-high 25 points from Bluejay guard Pop Isaacs. Senior guard Steven Ashworth followed up with 16 points and four assists, while senior Jamiya Neal added 10 points for CU.
After Nebraska embarked on an early 10-5 run, a quick three by Ashworth drew the Jays to within two before a pull-up jumper from Williams directed the game to its first media break. CU continued to look for a spark on the offensive end of the floor, but were unable to find any as the Cornhuskers held an 18-11 edge at the 10:47 mark.
With 8:01 left in the half, a steal and fast-break dunk by Neal got the Bluejay crowd on their feet, until a turnaround jumper by Williams quickly answered the Jays' bucket. After a scoreless five minutes for the Bluejays, a deep triple from freshman Jackson McAndrew finally gave Creighton the boost it needed. The CU offense tightened up to go on an 11-4 run powered by efficiency at the charity stripe and a fast-break trey by Isaacs in the final two and a half minutes of the frame to close in on the Huskers' lead by halftime, 35-24.
Immediately out of the locker room, Creighton came out with the fire and intensity it ended the first frame with as another Neal steal resulted in a one-hand slam to bring the Bluejays within nine. Following a three-pointer by Nebraska's Gary, triples by Isaacs and Ashworth on back-to-back possessions brought momentum back to the Jays and forced a timeout from Nebraska, with the Huskers in the lead 40-32 at the 15:35 mark.
An acrobatic and-one layup by Neal continued CU's offensive surge to get back into the game, but a quick Nebraska bucket stemmed the host's momentum. With minutes left in the game and trailing 61-51, Creighton put together one last push to mount a late-game comeback. The Bluejays picked up the defensive intensity to force back-back turnovers by Nebraska but were unable to capitalize on open shot attempts as the Bluejays fell short, 74-63.
The Bluejays shot a season-low 32.7 percent from the field (17-52) and knocked down 12 of its school-record 42 three-point shots as well as 17-of-23 free throws. The Jays grabbed 37 boards and dished 12 assists.
Also contributing for Nebraska was Connor Essegian with 15 points and Berke Buyuktuncel with 12 points and nine rebounds. The Cornhuskers shot 42.1 percent from the field, 4-of-16 from three-point range and 22-of-30 at the charity-stripe. Nebraska also collected 37 rebounds and dished eight assists as a team.
The Bluejays return to the court on Tuesday, November 26 for a 1 p.m. Central contest against San Diego State in the opening round of the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, Nev.
NOTES: The road team has now won each of the last three meetings, the first time that's happened in the series since 1925-26 ... Steven Ashworth had 16 points to move him to 1,501 in his career. Ashworth also made his 300th career three-pointer and now owns 301 triples ...
