Bluejay Men's Soccer Falls to #19 Akron, 1-0

Omaha, Neb. -- Playing for the Midwest Division Title, Creighton Men's Soccer pushed No. 19 Akron throughout 90 minutes. The Bluejays, however, came up a bit short falling by a 1-0 score on Friday, November 7.
The loss closed Creighton's regular season at 8-4-4 overall and 4-2-2 in BIG EAST matches. Akron, meanwhile moved to 5-2-1 in conference contests and 11-3-3 on the season.
In a back-and-forth first half, Creighton controlled the majority of possession and created the more dangerous chances through the first 38 minutes. The match turned in the Zips favor over the final seven minutes of the first half as Akron fired the final five shots of the frame. Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Hudson proved equal to the challenge, collecting five saves in the opening stanza. Three of those saves came during the final seven minutes of the half.
Creighton regained its composure in the second half and each team turned up the defense. The Bluejays limited the Zips to just three shots in the second half. The Bluejays were also limited to three shots over the final 45 minutes.
The difference in the match came in the 63rd minute as Thomas O'Rourke scored at 62:12. Akron's Jack Sullivan sent a pass into the box that was deflected by Creighton's Ryusei Shimonishi. The ball, however, settled in front of O'Rourke, who quickly fired the game-winner into the back of the net.
Akron closed the contest with a 12-9 edge on shots. Creighton created seven corner opportunities, but could not find the equalizer.
The loss eliminated Creighton from the BIG EAST Tournament, with Providence snagging the fourth spot courtesy of a 2-2 tie with Georgetown.
