Wurtz Sets Aces Record as #12 Volleyball Sweeps Hoyas on Senior Day

OMAHA, Neb. -- Nora Wurtz served a school-record nine aces and No. 12 Creighton Volleyball never trailed in a 3-0 Senior Day victory over Georgetown on Sunday. Scores were 25-8, 25-12, 25-12 as Creighton tied a BIG EAST record by winning its 45th consecutive regular-season league match.
Creighton won its 16th straight match, improving to 21-5 overall and 14-0 in BIG EAST play. Georgetown fell to 13-14 this fall and 6-8 in league play.
All four Bluejay seniors contributed while closing their careers 40-0 inside D.J. Sokol Arena against BIG EAST competition over the past four years. Ava Martin had 13 kills and hit .370 in her final regular-season home match, while Kiara Reinhardt had nine kills, five blocks and hit .389. Â Annalea Maeder dished 29 assists and collected seven digs. Sky McCune made her second appearance of the season as a serving specialist to help CU off to a strong start.
Georgetown was led by four kills by Dionna Mitchell as the Hoyas managed just 15 kills for the afternoon. Taylor Mercado notched a team-best 16 digs for the Hoyas, who finished the match with 35 digs, two blocks and one ace while hitting .043.
Creighton hit .418 overall and had 45 kills, 37 digs, 10 aces and six blocks.
Eloise Brandewie put down a kill on the first swing of the match and McCune served another two points before Georgetown got on the board. CU's lead reached 6-1 and eventually grew to 13-8 before a sideout got Wurtz into the match for the first time. The redshirt freshman promptly served the next 11 points, including five aces, as CU closed out the 25-8 victory. CU hit .481 and held Georgetown to -.100 hitting as the Hoyas had two kills and four errors in 20 swings. Sydney Breissinger paced CU with five of her team-leading 12 digs that set.
Wurtz remained at the starting line to open set two, serving back-to-back aces to help CU lead wire-to-wire once again. Wurtz rotated around to serve an ace at 17-6 to tie CU's single-match record held by Carolyn Decker and Martin, and it was Martin that put down a kill on set point at 25-12. Martin had six kills in the game and Ashlyn Paymal added a pair as the Jays hit .452.
Wurtz broke the single-match aces record with a service winner to make it 3-0 in the third set. She later authored a 7-0 service run behind the line as the Bluejay lead stretched to 22-10. One-by-one, Creighton coach Brian Rosen removed his senior starters as Maeder, Martin and Reinhardt all left to thunderous ovations. Martin had six kills in the final set.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday at 6 p.m. Central with a match at St. John's that will air on ESPN+.
NOTES: Georgetown's 15 kills were tied for the second-fewest ever by a Creighton opponent, one more than the 14 by Villanova on Nov. 21, 2014 ...
