OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team battled for nearly three hours before dropping a 4-3 decision to Idaho on Sunday, Feb. 9 inside the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha.
The loss snaps the Bluejays four-match win streak and moves their record to 4-2 on the year, while the Vandals improved to 4-2 overall.
Idaho jumped out to an early lead, securing the doubles point with wins on the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts. Seniors Valerie Negin and Bianca Rademacher continued their strong doubles play, earning a 6-3 win at the top doubles spot, before the Vandals clinched the first point of the match with 6-4 and 6-2 wins at the other two positions.
In singles play, Creighton got on the board first as Rademacher improved to 5-0 this spring following a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 1 singles position.
Idaho would follow with straight set victories on the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles court to clinch the overall dual. Diana Khaydarshina earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot, while Hanna Koprowska picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win on the No. 3 court and Lena Beckx secured the win with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph on the No. 5 singles court.
Although the match was already in hand for Idaho, the Bluejays never gave up hope, batting to a pair of three-set victories on the No. 4 and No. 6 courts. Pippa Roy dropped her first set of the day 7-6 (8-6), before rallying for a 7-6 (7-5), 10-6 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Fellow freshman Alem Cote opened with a 6-2 win in set one before Idaho's Valentina Rodas secured a 6-4 victory in set two to force a decisive third frame at the No. 6 singles position. In the third set, Cote jumped ahead early before hanging on for a 7-5 win.
Creighton will return to the courts on Feb. 14 when they travel to St. Charles, Mo. to take on Lindenwood.
