Women’s Soccer Falls Short in 1-0 Loss at #3 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Despite a strong effort defensively, the Creighton women's soccer team fell to No. 3 Duke, 1-0, at Koskinen Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 31 in Durham, N.C.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 1-4-0 on the season, while the Blue Devils improved to 4-0-0 overall with their 14th consecutive non-conference home win.
Although Duke controlled possession throughout the first half and pressured of the Jays from the first touch with nine shots in the first 45 minutes of action, it was Creighton's backline and senior goalkeeper Alyssa Zalac that battled the consistent Blue Devil pressure to keep the match scoreless.
Duke continued to pressure the Bluejays early on in the second half, challenging Zalac on multiple scoring opportunities. Those chances eventually paid off as Duke took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute when Avery Oder slipped a pass from Kat Rader into the back of the net off a failed clear from the Bluejays backline.
CU continued to fend off Duke's top tier offense over the final 40 minutes, countering with a pair of shots from Ariana Mondiri and Tejia Murray-Powell late in the contests.
Duke closed the match with a 21-2 advantage in shots and a 14-2 edge in corners. Zalac, meanwhile, collected a season-high six saves in her 21st consecutive start in goal for the Bluejays.
Creighton is back in action on Friday, September 5 at 5 p.m. when the Bluejays host No. 8 Arkansas in the 13th annual Socctoberfest match at Morrison Stadium.
