CU has four men's and one women's team honored
NEW YORK -Â The BIG EAST Conference has announced the 22 teams that have been recognized with 2024-25 Team Academic Excellence Awards for compiling the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport. Creighton brought home five of those awards -- most in the BIG EAST -- thanks to dominant performances in the classroom from its men's student-athletes.
Â
The winners were chosen based on the 2024-25 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Creighton became the first team since DePaul in 2008-09 to sweep the triple crown academically in men's cross country, men's indoor track and men's outdoor track, doing so with a 3.770 GPA. This is the sixth straight year that Creighton's men's cross country team has won the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award, and eighth time overall (2014-15, 2015-16, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, 2024-25). Elsewhere around the league, only Georgetown men's swimming & diving (8) also has an active streak of six or longer in its respective sport.
Creighton men's indoor track won its first BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award, while the men's outdoor track team won its second straight crown. Both those streaks date back to CU's initial participation in the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championships, respectively. The Bluejays cross country and track programs are coached by Chris Gannon.
Jim Flanery's women's basketball team picked up its sixth BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award in the past 10 years thanks to its 3.753 GPA. The women's basketball program was previously recognized in 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2021-22 and 2022-23.
Earning its first BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award during its dozen years in the BIG EAST was Greg McDermott's men's basketball program. The Bluejays owned a 3.400 team GPA in 2024-25, the program's best yearly GPA since at least 2000.
Seven schools had at least one team honored, with Creighton leading the way with five, while Georgetown and St. John's each had four teams recognized. Creighton's five recognitions tied its most ever, something also done in 2015-16.
