Bluejay Men's Soccer Outshines Rival Omaha, 3-2

Rossi Guides Creighton to 3-2 win with goal and assist.
Omaha, Neb. -- A pair of highlight reel goals in the second half lifted Creighton Men's Soccer to a 3-2 win over crosstown rival Omaha on Wednesday, September 10.
Knotted at 1-1 as the second half began, the Bluejays took the lead in the 54th minute thanks to the fancy footwork of Baustista Rossi and Martin Herrera. Dribbling through the midfield Rossi threaded a pass to Herrera near the top of the box, the grad transfer from Concordia alluded three Maverick defenders to score his first goal as a Bluejay at the 54:43 mark.
Creighton extended its edge to 3-1 on one of the longest goals in Bluejay history as Rossi blasted a shot from the midfield circle off the outstretched hand of Omaha goalkeeper Cole Steward at the 57:28 mark.
Omaha responded in the 60th minute as the Mavericks cut the lead in half to 3-2 when Bradley Takamo found Italo Jenkins in the box for a goal at the 60:04 mark.
A pivotal point in the match saw the Bluejays commit a foul near the edge of the box. Initially ruled a penalty kick for Omaha, the foul was reduced to a free kick following video review. Theo Klein fired from the top of the 18-yard box, but just missed.
Creighton's defense handled the Mavericks in the final 30 minutes to lead the Bluejays to victory.
The Jays got off to an early start when they were awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box in the ninth minute. Miguel Arilla's kick led to a Brian Edelman header goal at the 9:46 mark. This would be Edelman's first career goal as a Bluejay.
The Mavericks had a dangerous opportunity in the 16th minute when Italo Jenkins got a chance in the box but missed to the right.
Omaha pulled even in the 30th minute off a free kick taken by Yoshiki Igarashi, which hit off the head of Oskar Kvarnback, and finally off the foot of Maguire Perkins at the 30:24 mark in the first half.
Creighton had an opportunity to take the lead at the end of the first half when Bautista Rossi had a breakaway to set up Brady Bragg just outside the box, but it was saved by Cole Stewart to end the half tied at one.
Creighton closed the contest with a 15-11 edge on shots, while Omaha created eight corners to five for the Bluejays
The Bluejays returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 13th, as the Bluejays host Oral Roberts with kickoff starting at 7:00 p.m. on Homecoming weekend.
