Creighton honored 11 seniors prior to the match and held South Dakota shotless for the second straight match.
OMAHA, Neb. – In the last match before conference play, the Creighton women's soccer team put together its most complete performance of the season, cruising to a 4-0 senior day victory over South Dakota on Sunday, September 14.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 3-4-1 on the season, while the Coyotes fell to 4-2-3 overall.
A one-sided battle saw Creighton offense tally 19 total shots, possessing the ball for nearly 60 percent of the match. Defensively, Senior Alyssa Zalac recorded her first shutout of the season and as the Bluejay backline did not allow South Dakota to attempt a shot. In fact, Creighton has held South Dakota shotless for the last 215 consecutive minutes in the series, dating back to their meeting in 2018.
The Jays got on the board in the 26th minute as Olivia Duray recovered a deflected header from Ariana Mondiri at the back post, before slotting it into the back of the net for her first goal as a Bluejay.
Shortly after halftime Creighton pushed its advantage to 2-0 as a long entry pass from senior Ella Offer was flicked on to Mondiri from Mallory Connealy on the right side of the penalty kick dot. With a defender on her back, Mondiri turned and rocketed a shot past the South Dakota goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.
Creighton continued to capitalize offensively, extending its lead to 3-0 in the 80th minute when senior Brynn Gardner eluded a trio of South Dakota defenders and slipped a pass into the middle of the 18-yard box, where sophomore Anna Bragg hammered home her first goal of the season.
The Bluejays would add another insurance goal in the 89th minute as freshman Sarah Hyde dished a great pass to the center of the 18-yard box for classmate Kennedy Moore. The Omaha native used her left foot to strike the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career.
In total, four different Bluejays found the back of the net, marking the first time Creighton posted a 4-0 shutout since defeating Seton Hall, 4-0, in 2016. It also marks the first time since 2013 that the Jays have scored three or more goals in three straight matches since 2014, when the Jays did it in five straight contests.
Creighton will return to the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 20 to face No. 16 Georgetown in their first BIG EAST match of the season in Morrison stadium at 6 p.m.
