Bluejays knock Toreros from ranks of the unbeaten
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Kiara Reinhardt tied her career-high with 15 kills on .789 hitting as the No. 13 Creighton Volleyball team knocked off previously unbeaten San Diego with a four-set victory on Friday afternoon to open the Trojan Invitational. Scores of the CU win were 25-15, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15.
Creighton is now 2-2, while San Diego is 3-1.
Creighton never trailed en route to a 25-15 victory in the first set, storming to a 4-0 lead behind two kills and a pair of blocks by Eloise Brandewie to begin the day. CU's lead expanded to 15-9 and 18-10 before Destiny Ndam-Simpson's third kill of the set closed out CU's 25-15 victory. The Bluejays hit .333 in 24 swings and had six blocks, including three each by Jaya Johnson and Brandewie, as USD hit .000 and made nine attack errors in 30 swings.
CU also led wire-to-wire in the second set, hitting .364 in the set. Reinhardt had four kills in six swings and Ndam-Simpson contributed four more kills as the Bluejays rolled to victory. An ace by Sydney Breissinger helped CU take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
San Diego held off Creighton in the third set, extending the match with a 25-21 victory. Reinhardt had four kills in as many swings and Saige Damrow had six digs, but it wasn't enough to overcome five kills by Nemo Beach and four others from Isabel Clark.
Creighton pulled away in the fourth set as Breissinger served a 9-0 run for the second straight match to give CU an 18-10 lead it would not surrender. Breissinger finished the evening with four aces, one shy of her career-high. Reinhardt and Ndam-Simpson both supplied five kills in the clincher and Brandewie added four as well. CU hit .318 in the final set and limited USD to just .148 hitting with only five kills on 27 swings.
