MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- One month after Creighton Volleyball had its BIG EAST-record 50-match league win streak snapped by Marquette in five sets, the Bluejays returned the favor with a 3-2 win in Milwaukee on Thursday night at Al McGuire Center. The victory moves both teams to 9-2 in BIG EAST action to stand atop the conference standings with five matches remaining in league play.
Scores in favor of Creighton were 25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 26-24, 16-14, as the Bluejays improved to 9-1 all-time in five-set matches against Marquette.
Creighton was paced by 16 kills from Trinity Shadd-Ceres and 13 by Ashlyn Paymal, while Saige Damrow topped the Jays with 29 digs. Eloise Brandewie had a hand in nine of CU's 18 blocks to accompany her 11 kills.
Carson Tyler (22) and Tani Juric (19) led the Golden Eagle offense, and Luanna Markus contributed 43 assists and 24 digs.
Creighton (14-9, 9-2 BIG EAST) fell behind 7-3 early in the match before bouncing back to regain a 12-10 advantage over the host Golden Eagles. After MU evened the score at 12, 13 and 14-all, the Jays pulled away with six straight kills to build a 20-14 edge. The lead grew to 22-15 after a block from Brandewie and closed out the set with a 25-21 win after Shadd-Ceres put down an overpass. Paymal led CU with six kills in the opening frame, while Shadd-Ceres and Abbey Hayes had five apiece. CU's 19 kills were its most in a 25-point first set all season. CU also had four blocks in the opening set to limit Marquette to .171 hitting.
Marquette (14-7, 9-2 BIG EAST) scored three straight points to move in front 16-11. CU closed within three points at 16-13, but the teams exchanged six straight sideouts as the Bluejays could not narrow the gap before MU put together five of the next six points to get to set point at 24-16. CU saved three chances, but could do no better as MU evened the contest with a 25-19 victory. The Jays were limited to eight kills and eight digs in the second frame, though they did produce five blocks.
Creighton won a challenge to tie the third set at 9-9, but Marquette countered with nine of the next 11 points to take an 18-11 lead. The Golden Eagles closed out the set on Carson Tyler's 13th kill in a 25-17 win. CU hit .000 with nine kills in 43 swings as Marquette's defense collected 23 digs and five blocks in the third frame.
The Jays fell behind 6-2 in the fourth set, only to respond by scoring seven in a row on Hayes' serve. Marquette battled back to move in front 13-11 and led 15-14 at the technical timeout. CU scored the first four points out of the break to move back in front 18-15 but the Golden Eagles again would tie the score at 19-all. CU called timeout after falling behind 21-20. The teams traded service errors to get to 23-23. The Jays wasted one set point opportunity before kills by Hayes and Brandewie helped CU to a 26-24 victory to force a fifth set.
Despite surrendering the first two points of the set, Creighton took its first lead of the fifth set at 5-4 on an ace by Hayes, and Brandewie and Shadd-Ceres teamed for a block to make it 6-4 Bluejays and prompt a MU timeout. The Golden Eagles took advantage of back-to-back Bluejay attack errors to regain a 9-8 lead as Brian Rosen used his first timeout of the fifth set. Creighton got kills from Hayes and Brandewie to move in front 13-11. The teams traded sideouts to give CU a pair of match points. MU saved both match points to knot the score at 14-all. Unlike the first meeting when it squandered four match point chances, CU converted on its third opportunity to move into a tie for first place and hand MU its first home loss of the fall, after a kill by Shadd-Ceres and Dalton and Ames teamed up for a block of Tyler on match point. All told, the teams exchanged three leads and were tied nine times in the latest chapter of the league's best rivalry.
Creighton had 57 kills, 77 digs, 18 blocks and four aces while hitting .133. Marquette had 61 kills, 88 digs, 16 blocks and five aces while hitting .164.
Creighton is back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m. with a match against third-place DePaul (16-5, 8-2 BIG EAST) that will be streamed on ESPN+. The Blue Demons had been the only previous BIG EAST team to defeat Marquette before tonight.
