TUCSON, Ariz. – The Creighton softball team upended Drake, 3-2, in a five-inning shortened game, before falling to Utah Valley, 8-3 during day two of the Bear Down Fiesta on Saturday.
The Bluejays moved to 3-6 on the year with Saturday's results, while Drake fell to 6-4 and Utah Valley improved to 5-4 this season.
Game 1: Creighton 3, Drake 2 (5 innings)
The first game of the day saw Creighton grab the lead in the first and score two more in the fourth before holding on for a 3-2 win in a time shortened five-inning contest.
The Bluejays never trailed in the opener, jumping on the Bulldogs from the get-go, thanks in large part to a leadoff home run from senior Lily West. West's leadoff home run marked the second leadoff home run of her career while she also became just the 20th Bluejay in program history to surpass 100 career runs scored.
Drake would answer with a run in the second on an RBI groundout from Frankie Rite after the Bulldogs started the frame with a single from Ava Curry and a double from Natalee Watts.
Tied 1-1, Creighton flipped the momentum in their favor with a two-run fourth inning to regain the lead. Kaelan Schultz led off the frame with a double to left, before giving way to pinch runner Emma Bailey. Bailey would then advance to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single from Lynn Davis to give the Jays a 2-1 lead. Freshman Keegan Mayhue then lined an RBI double into the right center field gap to push the advantage to 3-1.
The Bulldogs would tack on a run in the fifth on an RBI ground from Kiley Kindelspire to cut the deficit to 3-2, but it wasn't enough as a drop time of 2 p.m. forced the game to be called in favor of the Bluejays.
Four different Bluejays recorded a hit in the contest with freshman Audrey Gilman earning the win with a four-strikeout complete-game effort.
Game 2: Utah Valley 10, Creighton 6
The second game of the day proved to be a much higher scoring affair as Utah Valley capitalized on 15 hits to earn the 10-6 victory.
The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Britney Moreno smacked a leadoff single up the middle and came in to score two batters later when Emma Haygood laced an RBI double into the right centerfield gap.
Creighton responded quickly with a run in the second courtesy of an RBI single from Mayhue after Erika Perez singled to right to leadoff the stanza.
The Bluejays would then take the lead in the third on a two-run single from Mayhue after the Jays loaded the bases with a pair of singles from Zoey Greenwood and Schultz and a Utah Valley defensive miscue.
Utah Valley, however, would seize control in the top of the fourth when they played five runs on five base hits. The Wolverines loaded the bases with a double from Angelique Mann and back-to-back walks to Peyton Hall and Brooklyn Ricci, forcing Creighton into a pitching change. The change paid dividends as Tatum Hall blasted a grand slam to right to regain a 5-3 Utah Valley lead. Two batters later, Moreno connected with the left field bleachers to push the advantage to 6-3.
UVU would tack on addition runs in the fifth and sixth on an RBI single from Ricci and an RBI double from Hall, before Creighton answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. West delivered a two-out RBI double to right center, before an RBI single from Greenwood made it 8-5.
Utah Valley once again answered with two in the seventh on a Bluejay throwing error to take a 10-5 lead, before a solo shot from Perez in the bottom half of the frame cut the final score to 10-6.
Greenwood, Perez and Mayhue all closed the day with two hits, while Mayhue drove in a season-high three runs. Sophomore Landrie Harris suffered the last allowing three runs in 1.0 inning of work.
Creighton concludes play at the Bear Down Fiesta on Sunday against host and No. 17 ranked Arizona at 12:30 p.m. CT.
