TUCSON, Ariz. – Playing in front of a pack house of 2,115 fans, the Creighton softball team fell to No. 17 Arizona, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hillenbrand Stadium in the finale of the Bear Down Fiesta in Tucson, Ariz.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 3-7 on the year, while the Wildcats improved to 8-3 with the victory.
Arizona's offense was fast and furious in the win as the Wildcats put up five runs in the home half of the first. Sereniti Trice opened the game with a leadoff double and came around to score the first run of the game on an RBI single from Tayler Biehl. Sydney Stewart followed with an RBI double to right center, before a two-run triple from Emma Kavanagh pushed the lead to 4-0. Two batters later, Jenna Sniffen delivered an RBI single to left to extend the Wildcats advantage to 5-0.
After two scoreless innings from freshman Ava Drehs, the Arizona bats went back to work plating two in the fourth as the first four Wildcats reached base safely. Trice led off the frame with a single up the middle and Biehl drew a walk, before both crossed the plate on an RBI single from Stewart and an RBI fielder's choice from Grace Jenkins to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.
Arizona would then walk off the Bluejays in the sixth, using back-to-back singles from Jenkins and Kez Lucas before an RBI single from Kavanagh closed out the 8-0 victory for the Wildcats.
Creighton starter Audrey Gilman took the loss (2-2), allowing five runs on five hits and three walks over 1.0 inning of work. Drehs, meanwhile, had her best stuff of the season, tossing a season-high 4.2 innings in the setback.
Wildcat starter Jalen Adams earned the win (4-1), limiting Creighton to just two hits in the complete game shutout.
Creighton returns to the Lone Star state next weekend, as they travel to UT Arlington and open play at the Boerner Invitational on Feb. 20 against South Dakota at 12:30 p.m.
