Karmazin Leads Women's Golf in Spring Opener

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas --Â Julia Karmazin took 11th to lead the Creighton women's golf team to a fifth place finish at the Texas State Invitational on Tuesday in New Braunfels, Texas. The field of 15 teams in Creighton's first tournament of the spring featured 13 teams from Texas, in addition to CU and Loyola (Chicago).
A sophomore from Omaha, Karmazin compiled rounds of 73, 74 and 73 for a 220 total. Her 11th place showing marked the third time in her last four outings dating to the fall that she's posted a top-15 finish.
Morgan Becker shot a 226 after loops of 78, 73 and 75 as she finished 27th.
Freshman Madison Murnan sandwiched a pair of 74's around a second round 81 to tie for 34th at 229. Her 74's beat her previous season-low by three shots.
Karsen Morrison tied for 61st with a 237 aggregate after circuits of 79, 76 and 82 and Katharine Marshall rounded out the line-up with scores of 80, 76 and 84 for a 240 total to tie for 65th.
Playing as an individual but not counting towards CU's team score was sophomore Kayla Maletto (83-76-87=246), which was good for 76th.
Tarleton State's Louise Depadt (70-64-71=205) won the tournament by four shots over Texas State's Briana LeMaire (75-65-69=209). The field of 84 competitors battled on the Landa Park Municipal GC on a course that measured 5,803 yards on its Par 72 setup.
Tournament host Texas State won the event by 26 shots after rounds of 294, 276 and 277, topping Tarleton State (284-290-299) for the title.
The Bluejays are back in action at the WMU Rio Verde Invitational on Feb. 20-22 in Rio Verde, Ariz.
