HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The Creighton softball team dropped a pair of contests on Saturday during the second day of competition at the Bearkat Classic in Huntsville, Texas. The Bluejays suffered a 10-2 setback to Central Arkansas in the opener before falling, 10-5, to host Sam Houston in the afternoon.
With the pair of losses, Creighton falls to 2-2 on the young season.
Game 1: Central Arkansas 10, Creighton 2 (5 innings)
In the first game of the day, Central Arkansas wasted little time taking an early advantage as the Bears plated two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Addie Graham led off the frame with a single back up the middle and advanced to third on a double by Trinity Brandon, before Kaitlyn Graham lined a two-run single through the right side to give the Bears a 2-0 edge.
Creighton responded in the top half of the third as freshman Zoey Greenwood raced out a leadoff single before moving to third on a pair of productive outs. Greenwood would then come in to score on a Kaelan Schultz RBI double to right to cut the deficit to 2-1.
UCA answered right back, pushing across three in the third and two more in the fourth to open up a 7-1 lead. The Bears used a two-run homer from Emma Robertson and an RBI double from Grace Molitor in the third to push their advantage to 5-1, while a two-run single from Robertson in the fourth gave Central Arkansas a 7-1 lead.
CU would plate a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Barnard, but Central Arkansas countered with a Brandon three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to secure the 10-2 run-rule victory.
Lily West led the way with two of the Bluejays seven hits, while Ava Drehs suffered her first loss of the season.
Central Arkansas was paced by three hits, three runs and three RBI from Brandon as she fell a triple shy of the cycle. Bailie Runner picked up her second win of the season, striking out two in the complete-game effort.
Game 2: Sam Houston 10, Creighton 5
In game two, Sam Houston stormed out of the gates and grabbed control early with a five-run first inning. The Bearkats patiently drew three walks and used an RBI single from Bella Perez and a grand slam home run from Karrlauhn Deas to take a 5-0 lead.
Creighton, however, answered right back with a four spot in the second to cut the deficit to 5-4. Schultz led off the frame with a solo shot to left, her first home run of the season, to put the Jays on the scoreboard. Tara Vandewater followed with a single before an Erika Perez double puts runners on second and third with no outs. Ashten Pierson then pushed home Vandewater with a perfectly executed bunt to make it 5-2. Emma Bailey was then hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases, before Greenwood and West each drew RBI walks to cut the lead to 5-4.
Still down 5-4 as the game moved to the third, Creighton rallied to pull even on a solo blast from Vandewater to open the top half of the frame.
Sam Houston, however, countered with a two-run homer from Tricia Yarotsky in the bottom of the third to regain a 5-7 lead.
The Bearkats would tack three additional runs in the fifth on a two-run single from Lydia Njus and a double steal to secure the 10-5 victory.
Creighton recorded six hits in the contest with Vandewater leading the way with two hits, including a home run and two runs scored. Brooklyn Patchen (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Creighton wraps up the Bearkat Classic on Sunday with a single game against South Dakota at 10 a.m.
