Scouting Creighton (3-6)
The Bluejays wouldn't be denied by one run again in the final game of the REV Texas Tournament, picking up their first win in five games with a 5-4, 12-inning victory over Tarleton State.Â
After two games ending in narrow losses — 8-7 to Tarleton State and 12-11 to Abilene Christian — Creighton took down Tarleton State in the two teams' second matchup of the weekend, pulling out a 5-4 road victory.
The game demanded a call-and-response rhythm, as the Texans took the early 1-0 lead and the Bluejays answered with a triple and RBI sequence in the second to even the score. In the fourth, a two-run home run from Isaac Waschmann got Creighton out in front 3-1 before a Texan RBI knotted the score at three in the ninth.
Creighton's game-winning run came in the 12th inning in response to a Tarleton State run to make the score 4-3. A series of plays from Waschmann, Nick Bowron and Nick Venteicher loaded the bases, allowing Rocco Gump and Nate McHugh to make the run home and secure the victory.
Creighton pitcher Jimmy Burke claimed the win with three innings pitched, recording five strikeouts in that time.
Scouting Gonzaga (3-7)
Ahead of its meeting with Creighton, Gonzaga earned an upset victory in the final game of the series against No. 13 Oklahoma.Â
The first two games saw Oklahoma dominate with a collective 25-5 run margin before the Bulldogs' pitching shut down the No. 13 team in the nation and helped Gonzaga to a 7-1 road victory.
The Bulldog pitchers allowed three total hits and just one in the first five innings. Jump starting the pitching masterclass, Karsten Sweum pitched six innings, recording seven strikeouts while giving up just one run and three hits.
Gonzaga freshman Landon Hood finished off the game with three innings on the mound. The freshman collected another five strikeouts and denied the Sooners any hits on his way to getting the save.
Offensively, a two-run home run from Gonzaga's Mikey Bell in the third, supplemented by five runs in the ninth, offset Oklahoma's lone run in the sixth inning.Â
Bell ties at the top of the Bulldog offense with 12 hits and leads with two home runs in 38 at-bats. Sweum's and Hood's outings against Oklahoma earned them Rawlings West Coach Conference Pitcher of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors, respectively.
Bluejay Bats Off to a Fast Start
Through nine games, Creighton's offense is certainly clicking. The Bluejays are hitting .296 with 61 runs scored and 52 RBI. Creighton has held the lead in eight of its nine contests, scoring 14 runs in the opening frame.
Ben North Named to Brooks Wallace Watch List
Bluejay Baseball's Ben North is one of three BIG EAST shortstops named to the 2026 Brooks Wallace Watch List, released by the College Baseball Foundation.Â
The top 100 shortstops in the country were announced Wednesday, led by several players putting up tremendous offensive numbers. But because the award is reflective of more than just offense, there are numerous players putting up solid defensive numbers as well.
Through nine games North is hitting .351 with 13 hits and seven RBI, while defensively he has not made an error in 48 chances. Ben closed the 2025 campaign hitting .289 with 69 hits, 59 RBI, 17 doubles and eight home runs.
The award honors the nation's top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
Home Opener
Creighton is 35-10 in recorded home openers, including a 9-3 win over UC Davis last season on March 8.
