QUEENS, N.Y. – Freshman Audrey Gilman was nearly flawless, striking out three and recording her second shutout of the season as the Creighton softball team blanked St. John's, 2-0, in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field in Queens, N.Y.
The win pushed the Bluejays record to 24-21 on the season and 12-4 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's fell to 27-17 overall and 6-10 in league play.
Creighton got all the offense it would need in the third innings, scoring twice on St. John's ace Ana Serafinko, who entered Friday's contest ranked second nationally with 214 strikeouts and led the BIG EAST with a 2.70 ERA.
The Bluejay rally began with one out in the frame as senior Lily West drew a walk and came around to score the first run of the ball game on an RBI double down the left field line from sophomore Tara Vandewater. Freshman Keegan Mayhue then drew a walk to put runners on the corners, before senior Erika Perez laced an RBI single into left to extend the Bluejay advantage to 2-0.
Staked to a 2-0 lead, Creighton's freshman ace Gilman worked out of a small jam in the bottom of the third and allowed just two baserunners over the final four innings to secure the Bluejay victory.
Gilman improved to 12-8 on the season with the win, allowing just six hits and punching out three in her seventh complete-game effort of the year.
Freshman Zoey Greenwood and Perez led the way offensively with two hits apiece, while Vandewater delivered the game-winning RBI. In addition, West recorded her 50th hit of the season, joining Bluejay Hall of Famer Christy Lunceford as the only two Bluejays in program history to record 50 or more hits in four consecutive seasons.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday, the Bluejays and Red Storm have altered the remaining weekend schedule and will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Central.
