INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Behind a dominant three-hit shutout from freshman Audrey Gilman, the Creighton softball team clinched the series win with a 7-0 victory over Butler on Friday afternoon in Indianapolis, Ind.
The win lifts the Bluejays to 20-20 on the season and to 9-3 in BIG EAST play, while Butler fell to 17-12 overall and 9-3 in league action.
Gilman, making her 19th career start, hurled her first career shutout when the team needed it the most. The freshman right-hander struck out two and walked just three batters and allowed three hits in the complete-game performance.
The Bluejay ace got some help from her offense as the Bluejays racked up 11 hits, including two doubles and a career-high tying four RBI from senior Ella Dalton. In addition, Avery Barnard, Kaelan Schultz and Keegan Mayhue all collected two hits in the victory.
Pitching dominated the early portion of the contest as both starting pitchers held the opposing team scoreless through two. The Bluejays, however, broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning as the Jays capitalized on a Butler error and a pair of stolen bases from Emma Bailey with a sacrifice fly from Ashten Pierson to take a 1-0 lead.
Following another scoreless frame from Gilman in the circle, Creighton quickly got back to work, plating three runs on three hits in the fourth to open up a 4-0 advantage. Senior Lily West drew a leadoff four-pitch walk and advanced to third on back-to-back single from Tara Vandewater and Mayhue to load the bases. Following a fielder's choice that cut West down at home, Vandewater stole for the third time this season to put the Jays up 2-0. Dalton then lined a two-run double into the right centerfield gap to extend the Jays lead to 4-0.
Leading 4-0, CU would tack on three insurance runs in the top of the sixth as Perez smacked an RBI double off the center field wall and came around to score on a two-run double from Dalton to make the score 7-0.
Gilman would close the door from there, closing out the series victory and picking up her 10th win of the season.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, April 7 at 6 p.m. when they welcome in South Dakota for a midweek contest at the Creighton Softball Stadium.
NOTES: Creighton improved to 21-14 in the all-time series with Butler, picking up its ninth win in the last 11 meetings … Creighton stole four bases on Sunday, moving into second on Creighton's Singles Season Stolen Base list and are now two shy of tying the school record for stolen bases in a season … Freshman Zoey Greenwood recorded her 18th base of the season, moving into a tie with Danai Martin and Jean Tierney for ninth on Creighton's single season stolen base record board.
