CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Creighton men's tennis team won the doubles point but couldn't carry over the momentum, falling to Xavier, 4-3, at the Camargo Raquet Club on Friday afternoon in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Bluejays to 11-11 on the year and 2-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers improved to 8-12 overall and 2-2 in league action.
Creighton took the first point of the match, securing wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Sophomore Rocky Mckenzie and freshman Jack McMahon teamed up for a 6-2 win on the No. 2 court, before senior Zachary Kuo and freshman Mathis Dahler clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the no. 3 doubles spot to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.
CU quickly extended its lead to 2-0 as Kuo cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets win on No. 5 singles court.
Xavier would answer with three straight-set wins on the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles courts to take a 3-2 lead.
McKenzie responded for Creighton with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 three-set victory on the No. 3 singles court to level the contest at 3-3.
With all eyes on court No. 4, Dahler gave Creighton hope winning the opening set 6-3 over Andrew Spurck. Spurck, however, rallied to win set two 7-5, before clinching the match with a 6-4 win in set three.
Creighton will be back in action on Easter Sunday for a 10 a.m. match against Butler in Indianapolis.
