NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Creighton's men's soccer team concluded its non-conference portion of the schedule on a high note Sunday afternoon, with a 3-1 win over Yale at the Yale Classic. Freshmen Jarod Tarver and Michael Kraus both notched their first career goals in the victory, while sophomore Brian Biggerstaff made his first career start at the center forward position.
The Bluejays fell behind in the first half, when the Bulldogs scored the first goal of the match at 17:50, one of five first-half shots Yale (1-3-0) put on goal.
CU didn't wait long to answer, when senior Zach Piercy scored his second goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Biggerstaff registered his first collegiate point with an assist on the Piercy deflection at 32:50.
Minutes later, the Bluejays continued their aggressive offensive attack spearheaded by Tarver and Kraus, resulting in a penalty kick being award to CU. Tarver took and converted the PK for his first CU goal at 35:51.
Then just 28 seconds after Tarver scored, he assisted on CU's third goal of the afternoon. Kraus took a feed from Tarver and notched his first collegiate tally at 36:19.
Senior goalkeeper Guido Leon stopped six shots in net for the victory. The Jays were out-shot 19-10 in the match, but CU managed to convert their first three shots on goal and hold on for the win. Biggerstaff and Tarver were named to the Yale Classic All-Tournament Team for their outstanding play over the weekend.
The Jays head into Missouri Valley Conference play with a 3-2-2 record. Five of the eight teams CU played in the non-conference slate, have been ranked in the Top 25 or are currently in the Top 25. CU now takes a two-week break from game action, before opening MVC play on Oct. 3.
“We're well prepared for the Valley, we've been tested against some strong competition,” Head Coach Bob Warming said. “I'm excited and ready for homecoming.”
The Bluejays' next match will coincide with homecoming and another “Get Blue” outing at the Creighton Soccer Field on Friday, Oct. 3. The Jays will welcome the Drake Bulldogs to town for their MVC opener, with kickoff set for 7 p.m., and pregame activities including a barbeque and live band starting at 5 p.m.
