ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Creighton women's tennis team wrapped-up their 2011 season today, falling to Northern Iowa 4-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The loss, which is the second loss to the Panthers in a week, drops the Jays to 11-11 on the season. The Bluejays say good-bye to three seniors, with twin sisters Leesa Cadwallader and Sarah Cadwallader graduating, as well as Lauren Mastro.
UNI started off the day by winning the doubles point in two matches. Jessica Kunzelmann and Krissy Lankelma defeated Leesa Cadwallader and Sarah Cadwallader 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles. Laia Gonzalez.garrido and Phoebe Walker then defeated Analese Snyder and Anna Kirshenbaum 8-3 in the No. 1 doubles.
Because it is the MVC Tournament, when a team reaches a point at which they have secured a win, that portion of the match is over. In doubles, the Panthers won the first two, leaving Kelsey Schmidt and Mary McMullan ahead of Lara Okicki and Chelsea Moore 5-4 when the doubles play ended.
The singles competition fell in the same order, with the Panthers winning the first three finishes to get the guaranteed win at 4-0. Lankelma defeated Leesa Cadwallader 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 singles to finish the first singles match of the day, followed by Walker taking the point in No 1 singles, topping Kirshenbaum 6-4, 6-2. Moore then defeated Sarah Cadwallader in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 singles to give the Panthers the win.
The Bluejays end their season at 11-11 and a 1-6 mark in conference. Creighton put together a six-match winning streak earlier in the season, including a 3-0 mark while in Florida for spring break. The loss today gave the Jays a five-match losing streak to end the season.
