
Women's Tennis Loses Heartbreaker to Providence

ORLANDO – The Creighton women's tennis team lost a heartbreaker to BIG EAST foe Providence 4-3 in a neutral site match at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex on Thursday afternoon.
Creighton (7-9, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped the doubles point to Providence (6-5, 1-0 BIG EAST) to open the match. CU senior Jennie Hartjes and freshman Darby Rosette teamed up for an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles but PC claimed the other two matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Hartjes rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles to even the score at 1-1. Providence moved ahead with consecutive victories on courts two and four to take a 3-1 lead.
Creighton climbed back into the match with consecutive wins of its own. Rosette claimed a three set win at No. 3 singles. After dropping the opening stanza 6-2, she won 7-5 in the second before securing a point at 10-8 in the third. Senior Amanda Noonan claimed a 6-4, 7-5 win on court five.
Tied at 3-3 the team match point came down to the match on court six. Senior Liz Vermillion went back and forth with her opponent. Vermillion won the first set 6-3 but lost the second stanza in a tiebreaker at 7-6. In the decisive set, Vermillion held match points and faced match points that went well into extra points. But the Friars came up with the victory at 13-11 to take the match and team match point.
Creighton is back in action on March 21 at Western Illinois.
