
Women?s Tennis Drops a 4-3 Decision to Villanova in Season Finale

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 9 seed Creighton women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 10 seed Villanova at the Wynne Tennis Center in a quarterfinal backdraw match of the BIG EAST Tennis Championship Presented by New York Life Friday afternoon.
CU senior Jennie Hartjes' claimed wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to complete her career at No. 3 all-time on the women's tennis program wins list with 134 total victories.
Creighton (10-13) swept the doubles point from Villanova (4-16) to open the match. Senior Jennie Hartjes paired with freshman Darby Rosette to earn an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Junior Sam Anderson and senior Liz Vermillion followed with an 8-3 victory on court two. Sophomore Katherine Nelsen and senior Amanda Noonan led 5-4 at No. 3 doubles before the match was called.
When the contest turned to singles action, the first five matches went in straight sets of the same results. Creighton won two of those matches.
Hartjes claimed career win No. 134 with a 6-3, 6-3 singles victory on court one. Fellow senior Noonan claimed also went out with a collegiate career-ending victory following a 6-2, 6-2 decision on court four.
Villanova fought back to even the match at 3-3 following singles wins on courts three, five and six.
The match came down to a tight three-set affair on singles court two. After dropping the first set 6-2, Nelsen rebounded in the second stanza for a 7-5 victory to even the match. In set three Nelsen kept it close, down 5-4 late but the Wildcat won the final game to clinch the team match point.
The quarterfinal backdraw contest marked the final match of the 2014-15 Creighton women's tennis season.
