OMAHA, Neb. — After securing the doubles point and taking a 1-0 match lead, Creighton Men's Tennis maintained a one-set advantage at three of the six singles spots; however, the Bluejays were unable to stave off an Illinois State comeback bid as the Redbirds edged Creighton, 5-2 on Friday evening at the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha.
Quinn Dippel and Alex Koca began the match with a 6-2 victory at No. 1 Doubles.
Illinois State countered with a win at the second spot; however, Nick Thompson and Aaron Chalstrom gave the Bluejays (1-3) a 1-0 match lead by winning at No. 3 Doubles, 6-3.
The Bluejays started off singles play strongly, with Dippel, Harrison Lang, and Chalstrom each earning hard-fought, 7-6 first-set wins.
Illinois State earned wins at No. 6, No. 5, and No. 2 Singles, respectively, to take a 3-1 match lead and apply heavy pressure to the remaining Bluejays in action.
Jakub Eisner edged Dippel at No. 1 Singles, 6-7, 7-5, 6-3, to clinch the match for Illinois State.
Chalstrom held a 7-6, 4-3 lead over Andreas Boers at the fourth singles spot, but Boers battled back, taking the second set, 7-5, before winning the third set, 6-2.
At the third singles position, Lang earned a hard-fought, 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 win over Rodrigo Oliveria.
"Our guys competed well throughout the match," Creighton head coach Tom Lilly said. "Credit goes to ISU for competing and playing just a little better on the big points. We will get better from this match and take some valuable experience away."
Creighton will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 6:00 p.m.
