OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's tennis team clinched its fourth-consecutive win on Friday night as the Bluejays bested Oral Roberts, 4-1, inside the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.
The Bluejays (4-3), who haven't suffered a setback since Feb. 6, outlasted Oral Roberts in doubles play to begin the match.
After the Golden Eagles (5-7) won at No. 2 Doubles, Creighton's Katherine Nelsen and Ashley Monaco paired up to win at the third doubles position to pull the team doubles score to 1-1.
Creighton's tandem of Ashley Ishimura and Darby Rosette pulled out a tough, 7-6 (4), victory at the top spot, clinching the doubles point for the Bluejays and giving them a 1-0 match advantage heading into singles play.
Oral Roberts' Andrada Gordan earned a victory at No. 4 Singles to pull the match even at 1-1; however, the Bluejays responded with three consecutive singles wins to seal the win.
"This was a very good team victory," Creighton head coach Tom Lilly said. "Once again, our girls had to work through some very tough moments and some controversial situations.
"I'm not sure we could have won this match a few weeks ago, so I am really proud of the way we are competing mentally," Lilly said. "We can still improve but this match was a victory in many ways."
Ashley Ishimura earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top singles position, and senior Sam Anderson then followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 Singles to give the Bluejays a 3-1 match lead. Ishimura's win extended her team-best win streak to five singles matches, while Anderson's victory was her fourth-straight.
Darby Rosette then notched her fourth-consecutive singles win, defeating Ceijenia Cornelius, 6-2, 6-2, to give Creighton the 4-1 win.
The two matches that were left unfinished saw Creighton's Ashley Monaco outlast Valentina Gisbert in the first set, 7-5, before taking a 4-2 lead in the second.
At No. 3, Nelsen fought back after a first-set loss to take the second set, 7-5, before play was suspended in the third set.
Creighton will be out of action until March 7 when the Bluejays travel to Orlando, Fla., to begin a stretch of five matches within four days.
