Ashley Ishimura and Michaela Henne won in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles to earn point
CAYCE, S.C. -- The seventh-seeded Creighton women's tennis team won a tiebreaker at the top doubles position to take the first point of the day before falling, 4-1, to second-seeded DePaul on Friday morning during the quarterfinal round of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
The Bluejays ended their season at 15-8, which marks the most wins in a single season since 1993 when the team finished 17-9.
Creighton won two out of three doubles matches to claim the first point of the match. Claire Embree and Erin Epperson earned a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot, but DePaul claimed the No. 3 doubles match. In the top doubles match, Ashley Ishimura and Michaela Henne sealed a tiebreaker victory to take the doubles point. Ishimura's backhanded shot to the back corner of the court ended the match at 7-3 in the tie-breaking game.
Despite the Bluejays winning doubles action in dramatic fashion, DePaul controlled singles play to take the overall match. The Blue Demons won in straight-sets at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 positions.
"We played some amazing doubles today at one and two to take the doubles point," head coach Tom Lilly said. "DePaul was just too strong in singles and did a good job responding after the doubles point. We had great energy today but just lost to a better team."
Before play ended, Ishimura took the first set, 7-5, during the No. 1 singles match.
Ishimura ended her junior campaign with a team-leading 15 singles victories (15-5).
With their victory at No. 2 doubles, Embree and Epperson claimed their 11th win as a doubles pair during the spring. Epperson led the Bluejays with 15 doubles wins overall in the spring, while Embree tallied 14.
Friday marked the end of the Creighton playing career for Ashley Monaco, Celine Massereau and Rosette.
Rosette ended her four-year run in Omaha with 106 victories, which ranks 10th on Creighton's career wins list. Of those victories, 57 occurred during doubles play, which is the eighth-best mark in program history.
