Golden Eagles sweep Bluejays in conference action
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 4-0 to Marquette on Friday night.
The Bluejays fell to 12-6 on the year, while moving to 0-1 against BIG EAST foes.
Creighton has now lost consecutive matches for only the second time this year. Friday also marked only the second time the Bluejays were held without a point.
Marquette started strong in doubles action, where a 6-0 sweep at the No. 3 spot followed by a 6-2 victory at the top spot allowed the Golden Eagles to enter singles play with a 1-0 advantage.
Marquette's hot hand continued into singles play where they extended their lead after a 6-0, 6-1 scoreline at the No. 3 spot. A 6-1, 6-3 defeat at No. 2 saw the Bluejays face a 3-0 deficit and on the brink of defeat. Creighton was unable to overcome the deficit, as Marquette put away the match at the No. 6 spot with a pair of 6-1 results.
The other three singles matches went unfinished. During the top singles match, Ashley Ishimura had set point in the opening set before her opponent won the point and forced a breaker. After falling 6-2 in the opening frame at No. 4 singles, Darby Rosette led 5-0 during the second set, and Claire Embree evened her second set at No. 5 following a 6-3 first set loss, but once Marquette clinched the overall match, the two teams agreed to stop because both teams had another conference match this week.
"We knew Marquette was going to be strong, but I thought they played very confidently and didn't give us much hope in several positions," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We will learn and move on from this match, but Marquette was just too good today."
The Bluejays continue their weekend trip in Milwaukee on Saturday as they take on Xavier in BIG EAST play. Doubles action is set to begin at 1:30 pm.
