Men's Soccer Upends No. 11 Clemson, 2-0, For Season-Opening Victory

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team scored twice during the late stages of the first half to upend No. 11 Clemson, 2-0, on Friday night at Morrison Stadium.
The Bluejays improved to 1-0-0, while the Tigers fell to 0-1-0. Friday's season-opener featured a crowd of 5,473, the sixth-largest in Creighton men's soccer history.Â
Creighton's first goal of the 2018 season during the 37th minute from the foot of Ziyad Fares. Younes Boudadi played a ball from the top of the 18-yard box towards the right side of the pitch before Akeem Ward redirected the ball to Fares about five yards in front of the goal where the junior placed the ball into the back of the net. Boudadi and Ward each received assists on the play.
The goal also marked Fares' first as a Bluejay, as the junior spent the past two years at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona.Â
Anthony Macchione converted during the 42nd minute to extend Creighton's advantage before halftime. Ward tallied his second assist of the night by sending a pass from the right-side of the 18-yard box towards the near post where Macchione found the upper 90 and helped the Bluejays build a 2-0 lead.Â
Both Fares and Macchione entered as substitutes during the 36th minute before the pair of goals.Â
Creighton ended the first half with an 11-2 advantage in shots.Â
The Bluejays continued to control possession during the second half but both teams each fired three shots during the final 45 minutes.
Clemson recorded shots during the 75th and 81st minute but neither had a chance to find the back of the net.
Freshman Paul Kruse did not record a save during his first start and victory in goal as a Bluejay, as Creighton ended the match with a 6-0 edge in shots on goal.Â
Friday's victory marked the Bluejays' fourth season-opening victory against a ranked opponent since 2013.Â
Creighton continues its season on Sunday at home against UC Davis. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Aggies is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.Â
