Nate Vontz ties for eighth place to lead CU
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Creighton men's golf team fired its best round in more than a decade en route to a seventh place finish at the Musketeer Classic, which wrapped up Tuesday at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Creighton shot an even-par 284 in the second round, its best since a 282 showing in the Butler Fall Invitational in 2008, and finished with an 883 total after a first round 295 and final round 304. CU's 883 aggregate was its best in any 54-hole competition since an 880 total to open the fall of 2017 in the UNO Invitational.
Leading Creighton's second round charge was junior Nate Vontz, who tied for eighth overall in the tournament. Vontz sandwiched 74s with a second-round 67 to match his collegiate-low. It was his sixth round of par or better this season, the most by any Bluejay since Kevin Stanek had eight such rounds in 2011-12.
Andrew McCormick opened with a 70 before closing with loops of 72 and 75 for a 217 total to tie for 16th place. McCormick now owns eight career rounds of par or better as a Bluejay.
Sophomore Tucker Knaak tied for 50th place following scores of 76, 73 and 76 for a 225 total.
Brandt Radloff started with scores of 76 and 72 before closing with an 80, tying for 62nd place overall. He edged out freshman Jack Olson's 230 total (75-76-79), which tied him 66th.
Wisconsin won the tournament with an 861 total, beating Northern Illinois by four shots in the 13-team field. The event featured four BIG EAST teams, with Butler finishing fifth, Creighton seventh, Xavier 11th and 2019 BIG EAST runner-up DePaul taking 12th place.
The tournament featured 87 players on the par 71 course that measured 6,809 yards. Morehead State's Cooper Collins won medalist honors with a 4-under score of 209 to edge out Wisconsin's Sam Anderson by one shot.
Creighton finished its fall season with a team scoring average of 298.4, its best mark since at least 2003. Vontz owned a 72.7 scoring average, with McCormick (74.9) and Knaak (75.9) not far behind.
The team will resume its season in the spring.
