Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season With Tie For 10th Place

Nate Vontz ties for seventh place to pace CU
ST. GEORGE, Utah -- The Creighton men's golf team opened its spring 2020 season with a tie for 10th place at the Pizza Hut-Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational on Tuesday in St. George, Utah.
The Bluejays fired a 306 on Monday, followed by a 305 on Tuesday, for a 611 aggregate. CU finished 38 shots behind Utah State, which won the event with a 5-under 573 that was three shots better than tourney host Southern Utah. The event featured 12 teams on the Sunbrook Golf Course that measured just over 6,900 yards and was a par-72 layout.
Nate Vontz finished with an even-par 144 total to pace Creighton. The junior had a round of 69 on Monday before closing with a 75 to tie for seventh place. It's the Lincoln product's third top-10 finish in seven tournaments this season.
Fellow junior Brandt Radloff tied for 39th place. He completed rounds of 74 and 77 for a 151 aggregate.
The best round by a Bluejay on Tuesday came from sophomore Tucker Knaak, who responded from an opening-round 82 to shoot a 74. His combined 156 tied him for 64th place.
Jack Olson (82-79=161) tied for 79th place, and Andrew McCormick (81-84=165) placed 84th.
Making his Bluejay debut, but playing as an individual, was Iowa Western transfer Cade McCallum. The Grand Island product started with an 84 before shooting a 75 to tie for 73rd with a 159 total.
Utah's Colton Tanner topped the field of 88 competitors with consecutive 69s for a 138 total to win by one shot.
Creighton returns to the course on March 9-10 at the Orlando Invitational at Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
