Nate Vontz ties for eighth place
JONESBORO, Ark. -- Nate Vontz tied for eighth place to help the Creighton men's golf team finish in sixth place at the Bubba Barnett Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Jonesboro, Ark.
Vontz earned his ninth straight top-11 finish dating to last season, climbing 10 spots on Tuesday to a tie for eighth place after a final round 70. He had opened the tournament on Monday with scores of 73 and 75. Vontz has now shot par or better in 5-of-12 rounds this fall and 27 times overall in 103 career rounds as a Bluejay.
Sophomore Jackson Thompson compiled rounds of 77, 70 and 74 to tie for 19th place with a 221 total. That was two shots better than classmate Charlie Zielinski (76-73-74), who tied for 27th overall. Thompson's 70 on Tuesday afternoon was the lowest round of his Bluejay career, while Zielinski extended his streak to 33 straight rounds in the 60s or 70s since enrolling at CU.
Cade McCallum tied for 38th place after loops of 78, 72 and 76 for a 226 aggregate and Jack Olson had rounds of 81, 75 and 79, tying for 70th with a 235 total. McCallum's five rounds of par or better tie him for most on the team with Vontz.
Competing as an individual and not factoring into Creighton's team score was Jake Kluver, who tied for 83rd place after rounds of 80, 77 and 82.
The 95-player tournament was won by Arkansas State's Jack Madden, who had scores of 76, 66 and 69 for a 211 total and a one-shot victory over Oral Roberts' Dustin Hasley.
The 17-team tournament was held at RidgePointe Country Club and measured 6,565 yards on its par-72 layout. Creighton placed in sixth place with an 888 total after rounds of 304, 290 and 294, but tournament host Arkansas State was 30 shots better to win the team title.
Having completed its fall season, Creighton will return to the course in the spring.
