Bluejays beat Sacred Heart before falling to UConn in West Palm Beach
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Creighton men's golf team opened its spring season splitting a pair of contests at the BIG EAST Match Play Championships in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Monday, Feb. 7. The Bluejays beat Sacred Heart 4-2 in its opener before dropping its second competition of the day to defending BIG EAST champion Connecticut, 4-1-1.
Sophomore Charlie Zielinski led the Bluejays with a pair of victories on the day, defeating Sacred Heart's Blake Moreno 2 & 1 before topping UConn's Jared Nelson 4 & 2. The Bluejay sophomore trailed four different times on the front nine against Moreno before finally taking his first lead with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 12 and 13. The Omaha product won the first two holes of his afternoon contest and led by three at the turn against Nelson to secure CU's lone victory over the Huskies.
Mackin set the tone for the Bluejays early in the match against Sacred Heart's Jason Pelley, winning five straight holes (No. 8-12) to take a commanding six-hole lead. Some of those same holes proved to be Mackin's undoing in the match vs. UConn, as Huskies senior Nick Hampian won seven consecutive holes (No. 4-10) to go up by six over the Bluejay freshman.
Kansas transfer Shaun Campbell made his Creighton debut one to remember with a 2 UP win over Sacred Heart's Jonah Camarillo. The New Zealand native never trailed and clinched the point with a par on the 18th hole. Campbell never led in his second match of the day, a 7 & 6 loss to UConn's Jimmy Paradise, who placed third at the league meet last May.
Cade McCallum lost his morning match 2 & 1 to Sacred Heart's Marcus Lim before tying UConn's Trevor Lopez in the afternoon. McCallum squandered a 4 UP lead through six holes, then had to rally and win the 18th hole to earn the tie in the nightcap.
Bluejay senior Nate Vontz went 1-1 on the day, defeating Sacred Heart's Nathan Kim 4 & 2 before taking a 4 & 3 defeat against UConn's Caleb Manuel in a battle of All-BIG EAST selection.
Creighton closes play at the BIG EAST Match Play Championship on Tuesday morning with a match against St. John's.
