Women's Tennis Rides Early Momentum To Down UNO, 6-1

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team notched a 6-1 victory over crosstown foe UNO on Friday night at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
The Bluejays improved to 5-2 this season, while the Mavericks fell to 5-7.
Creighton earned the first point of the night by winning the No. 3 and No. 1 doubles matches. Emma Gener and Malvika Shukla started the action with a 6-3 win at the third slot. UNO tied the doubles portion of the contest with a 6-4 victory at No. 2 before Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox improved to 5-2 in No. 1 doubles with a 6-4 win against the Mavericks' top pair.
UNO tied the match at 1-1 with a win at the top singles position, but the Bluejays sealed the overall dual victory with three straight-sets wins before ending the night with a pair of three-set wins.
Gener put the Bluejays back on top with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3, and Joanna Nowakowska earned a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 4 slot to extend Creighton advantage to 3-1.
Shukla clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-3 victory during the No. 6 position.
Alex Centra (No. 5) and Wilcox (No. 2) each earned three-set wins to close out the night.
"Our girls had to fight through some nerves and tight moments in front of a fantastic crowd tonight," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Getting the doubles point was important and gave us some momentum. UNO is a good team and we had to compete well to win tonight."
Creighton returns to the courts for a match on Saturday night against St. Thomas at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center at 6:45 p.m.
