Maly and Jensen Lead Bluejays to 67-51 win at Xavier

Cincinnati, Ohio -- Sophomores Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly each delivered 14 points as the Creighton women's basketball team bested Xavier 67-51 on January 2 for another road win in BIG EAST play.
The victory lifted Creighton to 9-3 on the season and 4-0 in BIG EAST action, while Xavier dropped to 6-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 12-5 lead (3:57) in the opening frame, getting threes from Jensen, sophomore Emma Ronsiek, senior Payton Brotzki and sophomore Jayme Horan. Xavier, however, closed the quarter hot to tie the game at 14-14.
Things remained close in the second period with Creighton holding a 28-25 edge at the half.
Knotted at 35-35 midway through the third, Maly took over in the blink of an eye. The Nebraska native drained a trio of three-pointers in less than one minute, knocking down her first with 6:01 on the clock. She connected again at 5:41, then once more at 5:07 to push Creighton out to a 44-37 advantage. The Bluejays closed the third quarter on another triple from Maly as Creighton hit seven from beyond the arc in the frame to take a 53-41 lead into the fourth.
Creighton extended its lead to as much as 18 points at 63-45 following another three-ball from Horan and a layup by Ronsiek (2:53), coasting to the 67-51 victory.
Jensen and Maly led all scorers with 14, while junior Carly Bachelor rounded out the Bluejays in double figures with 10 points.
Four Musketeers closed the contest in double digits as Shaila Beeler, Mikayla Hayes and Mackayla Scarlett finished with 11 points, while Kaelynn Sattterfield had 10 points.
"The third quarter was obviously huge, to outscore Xavier 25-16 in the frame certainly gave us a lift," said head coach Jim Flanery. "After sitting in the hotel room for the majority of this trip, I was pleased with our performance today."
The Bluejays finished with 14 three-pointers and posted 21 assists on 24 made field goals.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Friday, January 7 at home against Marquette at 7:00 pm (CT).
