Bluejay Women's Hoops Faces Marquette on Friday

Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball team faces its biggest test of the BIG EAST conference season as the Bluejays face Marquette in D.J. Sokol Arena on Friday, January 7 at 6:30 pm. The Golden Eagles bested Creighton three times last season, but Creighton holds a 14-12 series advantage over Marquette.

Scouting Marquette (9-3, 2-1 BIG EAST)
The holidays and a Covid pause has kept Marquette off the court since December 22. In the Golden Eagles last game Marquette posting an impressive 60-49 home win over Cincinnati.
Powered by its defensive tenacity, Marquette is limiting opponents to just 54.5 ppg. One reason the Golden Eagles are so stingy is their ability to crash the glass. Marquette averages 43.6 rebounds per game.
Offensively Lauren Van Kleunen leads the way with 13.9 ppg, but Karissa McLaughlin and Jordan King are just a step behind at 13.1 ppg and 11.8 ppg respectively.
One key to the game on Friday will be if McLaughlin is able to play. She suffered an injury against Cincinnati, spending the second half in a boot.
Scouting Creighton (9-3, 4-0 BE)
The Bluejays have gotten off to a hot start this season in part by Creighton's ability to be a chameleon. The Bluejays proven adept at winning in different ways, whether that be pounding the ball in the paint or connecting from long range. One key to Creighton's success is sharing the
basketball, the Bluejays are averaging 19.6 assists per game to rank fifth in the NCAA.
A trio of sophomores lead the way for Creighton with Emma Ronsiek leading the way at 13.4 ppg. Just one step back is Morgan Maly (11.8 ppg) and Lauren Jensen (10.7 ppg). Junior Carly Bachelor comes in just below double-figures at 9.9 ppg.
Defensively the Bluejays have been successful at gang rebounding and creating more pressure on the ball this season. The Bluejays are averaging 36.6 rebounds and 15.3 turnovers per contest.
Keys To the Game on Friday, Jan. 7
The Bluejays have opened BIG EAST action 4-0 for the first time since joining the conference in 2013-14. Creighton has started a conference season 3-1 in four seasons, but this is the first 4-0 start since the Bluejays were a member of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) in 2012-13 and in 2005-06.
The last time the Bluejays opened conference play 5-0 or better was during the 2004-05 season, starting MVC action with six consecutive victories.
Maly Claims a Spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for Second Straight Week
Tied at 35-35 in the third quarter at Xavier (Jan. 2), sophomore Morgan Maly changed the course of the game on her own. The Crete native connected for three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, beginning at the six-minute mark of the period. She went on to close the quarter with another trifecta, pushing Creighton out to a 53-41 edge heading into the fourth quarter.
Maly finished the game with a team-high 14 points to claim a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the second consecutive week.

- Rebounding: The battle of the boards is a key to every game, but when facing Marquette is it the top priority. The Bluejays must gang rebound to offset the Golden Eagles physicality.
- Moving the Basketball: This has been a strength for Creighton this season, but the defensive presence that Marquette presents will force the Bluejays to be more precise.
- Defend the Paint: Defensively the Bluejays will need to force Marquette to take tough shots. The Golden Eagles primary outside threat is McLaughlin, but Marquette likes to pound the ball inside. Â
- Emma Ronsiek and Rachael Saunders: Ronsiek will be relied upon to battle inside on both ends of the floor. Saunders, meanwhile, can be the physical lightning rod for Creighton.
