Women’s Tennis Overpowers Providence in BIG EAST Opener, 5-1

Bluejays earn five straight-sets victories to claim 5-1 win.
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team overcome the weather and multiple injuries to opened BIG EAST action with a 5-1 victory over Providence on Monday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Bluejays improved to 6-3 on the year and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Friars fell to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action. It is the first time the Bluejays have opened BIG EAST play with a victory since defeating Providence in the conference opener in 2017.
Due to weather approaching the Orlando area, singles were played first in hopes of declaring a winner. The Bluejays dominated singles plays with straight-sets victory at the bottom fifth singles positions to earn a 5-1 win over the Friars. Doubles play was suspended due to weather within the Orlando area.
Freshman Allison Wilcox earned the Bluejays first point of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 straight-sets win at the No. 6 singles position. Malvika Shukla followed with a 6-3, 6-3 straight-sets victory at the No. 2 slot to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead in the match.
Freshman Valerie Negin extended Creighton's lead with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph at the No. 2 singles spot before Sarah Wilcox clinched the match for the Bluejays by defeating Providence's Katie Mulvey, 6-3, 6-4, in the No. 3 singles position. Meredith Benson pushed the Bluejays out in front 5-0 with a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 5 position.
Providence got on the board as Olivia Wright outlasted Kate Krueger in a three-set thriller. Wright took the early advantage with a 6-3 win in the first set but Krueger answered with a 7-5 win in the second frame. In the decisive third set, Wright outlasted Krueger 10-6 for the three-set win.
"Our girls continued to battle through injuries, and we are managing everything the best we can," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Our athletic trainer Mallory Barber is getting a lot of work in, but these girls are tough and continue to compete through pain. We have another conference match tomorrow and will continue to give it all we have."
Creighton returns to the courts tomorrow night when they face Seton Hall in BIG EAST action at 6 p.m. at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
