Women’s Tennis Opens BIG EAST Championships With 4-1 First Round Win Over Seton Hall

The Bluejays advance to take on No. 2 seeded Marquette on Friday
CAYCE, S.C. – The No. 7 seed Creighton women's tennis team started its run in the 2022 BIG EAST Tennis Championship Presented by JEEP with a 4-1 first round victory against 10th seeded Seton Hall on Thursday morning at the Cayce Tennis & Fitness Center.
The Blujeays improved to 12-7 on the year and advance to face second-seeded Marquette on Friday in the quarterfinals, while the Pirates ended their season with a 6-13 record.
"We knew this was going to be a challenging match as Seton Hall is talented and well coached," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Our girls had good energy and fought through some tough moments but won a few more points at big moments throughout the match."
Creighton started Thursday's match out on the right foot by earning wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches to take the first point of the match. Sophomore Malvika Shukla and senior Sarah Wilcox improved the Bluejays record to 13-2 at the No. 2 doubles position with a 6-1 win, before senior's Meredith Benson and Gabby O'Connor earned a 6-1 win at the No. 3 doubles slot.
The Bluejays continued to pile up the wins during singles action. Shukla won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4, while freshman Valerie Negin captured a a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 2 singles spot to give Creighton a 3-0 lead.
Seton Hall responded with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 singles position before Benson clinched the match for the Bluejays with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 triumph at the No. 5 singles spot.
"It's a lot different going from indoors on fast courts to these slow courts but we handled things well on the majority of the courts," Lilly added. "We are going to need to bring stronger play and really compete and we will have a shot at Marquette tomorrow."
Creighton and Marquette are slated to begin play on Friday at 11:45 a.m. Central at the Tennis & Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
