OMAHA, Neb. – Graduate student Alfie Pope scored two goals and senior Giorgio Probo dished out two assists as the Creighton men's soccer team upset No. 7 Akron, 3-2, on Wednesday night inside Morrison Stadium.
With the win the Bluejays moved into second in the Midwest Division of the BIG EAST, improving its record to 3-2-1 in league play and to 4-5-5 on the season. Meanwhile, the Zips suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 9-1-5 overall and to 2-1-3 in BIG EAST play.
After a scoreless defensive battle in the first half, Creighton opened the flood gates and soared out to a 3-0 lead with goals in the 48th, 63rd and 84th minutes.
The Bluejays got on the scoreboard in the 48th minutes as Pope one touched a pass from junior Mark O'Neill through the five hole of the Akron goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead. Pope was roughly six-yards in front of the net as O'Neill sent a pass to his right foot for the shot. Probo put the play into motion to earn his first assist of the night.
Fifteen minutes later junior Omar Ramadan added to the Creighton's lead in 63rd minute after rebounded his own blocked shot and firing it directly into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Pope then delivered his second goal of the match in the 84th minute, this time popping a pass into the back of the net from junior Jackson Castro for his team-leading sixth tally of the season. The goal saw Probo find Castro wide open in the midfield before Castro slipped a pass through the Zips backline. Connecting with Pope on the run just inside the 18-yard box, Pope fired a shot into the back of the net at the far post to extend the lead.
Akron, however, would cut the deficit down to one with goals in the 89th and 90th minutes but it was too late as the Bluejays secured the 3-2 victory.
Despite the loss, Akron closed the match with a 18-10 edge in shots and a 15-6 advantage in corner kicks created. Sophomore Blake Gillingham collected five total saves to earn the victory.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 22 against Connecticut at 2:30 p.m. The Bluejays will honor their seniors prior to the contest.
