Bluejay Men's Soccer Opens BIG EAST Tournament at Providence

Omaha, Neb. -- The postseason begins on Saturday, November 4th and the Creighton Men's Soccer squad will look to repeat the performance the Bluejays delivered last season. Creighton opened the 2022 gauntlet as the No. 6 seed, besting Xavier, Seton Hall and eventually Georgetown to earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This season Creighton is the No. 6 seed once more, but this time the Bluejays begin at No. 3 Providence.
Series History: Creighton trails series with Providence, 6-7-2
Providence edged ahead in the series history with a 4-2 win last season in Rhode Island. The Bluejays are 2-5-1 against the Friars away from Omaha, including 2-4-1 in road contests.

Scouting Providence (7-5-3, 4-2-2 BIG EAST)
Providence enters Saturday's contest 3-1-1 in their last five contests, but fell 1-0 at Seton Hall in regular season finale. The Friars are 5-3-0 at home, but have won their last four contests at Chapey Field, including a 1-0 result over #5 Georgetown on Oct. 14. During that four match home stretch, Providence has allowed just one goal.
The Friars have sent Lukas Burns into the net for every second of play this season (1,350 minutes). He has recorded six shutouts and has a 1.33 GAA. Over his last seven matches, however, Burns has surrendered two combined goals for a 0.29 GAA since Sept. 29.
Providence's offense is led by Brendan McSorely's nine goals. Two additional Friars have double digit points this season in Nathan Messer with 12 points (four goals and four assists) and Pearse O'Brien at 12 as well (three goals and six assists).
Scouting Creighton (4-6-6, 3-3-2 BIG EAST)
The Bluejays regular season has been inconsistent at best. Yet the Bluejays return much of the squad that hit the afterburner in the 2022 postseason. A few areas that could turn the tide could incorporate a bit of luck. Last season the Bluejays were 10-of-11 in penalty kicks, while this season Creighton is 0-for-0. In addition the Bluejays have seen six goals waived off by calls of offside and another taken off the board as a corner kick entry was ruled to have curved out of bounds before bending back in to find a Bluejay noggin and the back of the net.
Alfie Pope leads Creighton with seven goals (14 points), while Giorgio Probo has eight assists. Five other Bluejays have at least two goals, including freshman Miguel Arilla with four goals and four assists (12 points).
Sophomore Blake Gillingham has been in goal for the last 10 matches, allowing 15 goals (1.50 GAA). Gillingham is 3-3-4 with 43 saves and one shutout.
Bluejays Extend BIG EAST Tournament Streak
Having reached the 2023 BIG EAST Championship, Creighton continued a stretch of 11 consecutive appearances in the conference tournament. The Bluejays have the longest running streak. The second longest streak belongs to Georgetown with seven consecutive seasons.

Bluejays 2022 Surge Began at Providence
Creighton's seven match win streak that powered the Bluejays through the BIG EAST Tournament and into the 2022 College Cup drew its motivation from Creighton's 4-2 loss at Providence in the regular season finale. The loss put the Bluejays in peril as Creighton needed help to secure the sixth and final spot. Once Creighton took a breath of new life, the Bluejays soared into the College Cup.
