WICHITA, Kan. – The Creighton women's tennis team dropped their final regular season match of the season to Wichita State, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Coleman Tennis Center in Wichita, Kansas.
The loss moves the Bluejays to 15-7 on the year, while Wichita State closed out the regular season with a 12-9 overall record with the win.
The Shockers secure the first point of the match with wins at the top two doubles positions. Senior Kate Krueger and junior Bianca Rademacher claimed their eighth straight doubles victory with a 6-1 triumph, before Wichita State captured a 6-2 win on the No. 1 court and a 6-4 victory on the No. 2 to clinch the first point of the day.
In singles play, the Shockers extended their lead out to 3-0 with wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions, before junior Malvika Shukla captured a three-set win at the top singles position. Shukla battled to a 7-5 win in set one, but fell in set two 6-0, forcing a decisive third frame. In the third set, Shukla controlled play cruising to a 6-4 victory.
Wichita State then finished the match with a three-set victory on the No. 4 court to secure the win for the Shockers.
"Wichita State is possibly the best team we have played all year and we were right there with them," said head coach Tom Lilly. "The doubles and the overall match were there for the taking but the Shockers took just a few more bigger points to earn the win. We are going into conference healthier than we have been much of the year and will put everything into the tournament."
Creighton returns to the courts next week for the start of the BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, South Carolina.
