OMAHA, Neb. -- A late first half goal from freshman Shani Sirota was all the Bluejay defense needed as the Creighton women's soccer team closed out non-conference play with a 1-0 shutout victory over South Dakota State on Friday night in Morrison Stadium.
The win moved Creighton to 2-2-4 on the year, while the Jackrabbits fell to 7-2-0. The Bluejays earned the win in front of 1,413 fans, the seventh largest crowd in program history.
After nearly a scoreless 45 minutes, Sirota broke the scoreless battle in the 45th minute (44:25) with the first goal of her career. Senior Abigail Santana sent the play in motion, delivering a cross into the box at the near post where Sirota charged in and headed home the goal to give Creighton a 1-0 lead.
Although the Jackrabbits held a 4-3 edge in shots, Creighton still took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Coming out of half time the Bluejays once again with a little more intensity on the offensive side of the pitch. Senior Maddie Radke chipped a shot over the top of the Jackrabbits goalkeeper but was just wide, while senior Lara Kazandjian missed high on another scoring opportunity in the first five minutes of the second period.
South Dakota State's best opportunity to level the match was in the 90th minute as the Jackrabbits earned a corner kick and a free kick in the final minute, but failed to convert as the Bluejays backline held their own.
South Dakota State finished the match with a 12-7 edge in shots and a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks, while graduate goalkeeper Keelan Terrell needed just two saves to earn the 16th shutout of her career.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 21 when the Bluejays travel to Connecticut for the BIG EAST opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central from Storrs, Conn.
