Women's Basketball Delivers 80-74 Win Over #21 Nebraska

Omaha, Neb. -- Locked in a seesaw battle that featured 11 ties and 16 lead changes, seniors Mallory Brake and Molly Mogensen ensured the Bluejays would continuing their recent success against the in-state rival, the Creighton Women's Basketball team defeated #21 Nebraska, 80-74, on Friday, November 22.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 2-2 on the season, while the Huskers fell to 5-1. Creighton has won eight of the last nine meetings.
Knotted at 66-66 with under three minutes to play in regulation, Creighton seized control as Brake connected on a corner trey to ignite an 8-0 run. The following possession saw Mogensen knock down another trifecta, then senior Lauren Jensen cashed a mid-range jumper to give the Bluejays a 74-66 lead with 1:39 left. Twice the Huskers closed within four, but Jensen kept Nebraska at bay with six free throws in the final 31 seconds.
The opening moments of the game saw Nebraska take advantage of its size advantage with three consecutive buckets in the paint to grab a 6-2 edge (7:55). Creighton responded with 10 points over a two-minute stretch, highlighted by treys from senior Morgan Maly as well as junior Kennedy Townsend. With the Bluejays leading 17-11 (3:40), the Huskers answered with an 11-2 run to close the quarter with a 22-19 edge.
The squads traded buckets throughout the second quarter with Creighton pulling even at 35-35 on back-to-back baskets from Jensen and Maly in the final minute, but Nebraska reclaimed the advantage via two free throws to take a 37-35 lead into halftime.
Jensen and Maly were superb in the third quarter, scoring 15 of Creighton's 17 points. Nebraska, however, continued to pound the ball down low. The back-and-forth battle produced 11 lead changes in the frame, but a 5-0 Nebraska burst over the final two minutes put Creighton down 55-52 heading into the fourth.
Once the fourth began, Brake and Mogensen took charge. The duo scored 17 of Creighton's 28 points in the frame, including 12 from Mogensen alone.
Jensen led all scorers with 31 points, her second 30-point effort of the season. Three other Bluejays closed the game in double figures as Maly deliverer 18, while Mogensen and Brake had 12 and 11 points respectively.
Nebraska got 26 points from Alexis Markowski and 20 from freshman Britt Prince.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Monday, November 25 as the Bluejays begin action in the Emerald Coast Classic against Wichita State at 7:30 p.m.
