ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team overpowered Seton Hall in a 5-2 victory in the BIG EAST opener on Tuesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
The Bluejays improved to 7-4 on the year and 1-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Pirates fell to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in league action.
"This was a gut check for us today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We played some solid doubles and then Seton Hall came out tough in singles and we were behind in five of the first sets before settling in. I give our girls credit for being tough. We are battling a lot more than just our opponents right now, and it was a good win to get for our second match outdoors against a tough, well coached conference opponent."
Creighton wasted no time earning the first point of the afternoon, picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin captured their third straight doubles win, teaming up for a 6-1 win on the top doubles court, while sophomores Annika Elvestrom and Ana Paula Martinez captured an identical 6-1 win on the No. 3 doubles court.
Seton Hall regrouped and battled tough in singles play, but in the end, Creighton clinched the match with wins at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 singles positions.
Shukla got things started with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the top singles position to give Creighton a 2-0 lead in the match. Seton Hall would then cut the deficit in half with a 6-1, 6-4 straight-sets win on court 6, before Negin claimed a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 straight-sets triumph at the No. 2 singles position to give the Jays a 3-1 advantage.
Elvestrom then clinched the match moments later with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 straight-sets victory at the No. 5 singles position over Hili Kronzon.
With the match already in hand, the Pirates earned another win on the No. 3 singles court as Martinez was forced to retire in the third set. Creighton, however, closed the match with a victory on the No. 4 singles court as junior Siri Kongara overcame a one-set deficit to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 three-set win over Niamh Campbell.
With her pair of wins today, Shukla continued her climb up the Bluejays all-time wins list, moving into a tie with Valerie Graves for the sixth-most win in program history with 112.
Creighton continues play in Orlando on Wednesday against Villanova. First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. Central.
