Bluejays finish under par in final two rounds
BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- Returning to competition for the first time in more than a month, the Creighton men's golf team earned a third-place finish at the 2024 Jackrabbit Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Boulder City, Nev.
The Bluejay performance was highlighted by back-to-back rounds of at least 5-under par to close play, including a final round 281 (-7) that ranks as the fourth-lowest round in the program's last 20 years.
Senior Shaun Campbell shared team-best honors after tying for sixth place. After rounds of 74 and 70 on Friday, he finished with a 71 for a 215 aggregate. It's the New Zealand native's fourth top-10 finish in five team events this year.
Sophomore Grant Feldman shot a 78 to open play before tying a season-best with a 68 in Round 2 and a final round 73 for a 219 total.
After beginning the tournament with a 79, senior Charlie Zielinski had back-to-back rounds under par with scores of 71 and 70 to tie for 15th place with a 220 total. The Omaha native now owns a program-record 37 career rounds of par or better, breaking a mark he had shared with John Sutko.
Senior Jackson Thompson tied for 23rd place following loops of 77, 76 and 70. Thompson's closing 70 was his best round in a Bluejay polo since February of 2022.
Rounding out the Bluejay scoring contingent was Owen Price, who tied for 28th after improving upon his opening-round 80 with scores of 74 and 70. Price now owns six rounds of par or better during his freshman campaign.
Competing as individuals and not factoring into CU's team score were juniors Cole Davis (74-71-70=215) and Owen Mackin (79-74-74=227). Davis tied Campbell for sixth place while Mackin tied for 38th in the field. Davis' 70 matched his season-low round and helped guide him to his first Top 10 finish as a Bluejay.
Tournament host South Dakota State (300-283-285=868) won the tournament by three strokes over UC Santa Barbara (297-288-286=871) and four shots ahead of Creighton (308-283-281=872). Jackrabbit sophomore Bryson Mercier (70-71-70) won medalist honors with three straight rounds under par, winning by two shots over UCSB's Blake McGovern (72-69-72=213), Loyola Marymount's Alejandro Alonso (75-70-68=213) and North Dakota's Brandon McGarry (69-72-72=213).
The tournament featured 12 teams and 84 players that competed on the Par 72 Boulder Creek Golf Club course that measured 7,402 yards.
Creighton stays on the road and heads to Phoenix, Ariz., for the GCU Invitational, which begins on Tuesday.
